PHASE ONE

Comedy Courage Phase One
Initial Three Month Course And Showcases

Screening: Each potential student undergoes a 30 minute screening interview to make sure he or she meets the criteria for participation in Comedy Courage. The criteria includes having stable housing, a support system of both peers and professionals, being stable on any medication he or she may take, a reasonable command of written and spoken English, and the motivation and desire to create healthy change.

Classes: Classes take place once a week for the first month, then twice a week for the following two months. Students learn how to write, perform, structure and edit a comedy act of between 3-10 minutes.

Materials: Each student receives the Comedy Courage workbook.

Showcase #1: This showcase is for people living with mental health diagnoses, friends, family, employers and the general public. Playing to a friendly and supportive audience gives the students confidence for showcase #2.

Gala Showcase #2: This showcase is for an audience of 600 and is part of a gala dinner and live & silent auction designed to raise money for the next year's Comedy Courage class and our sponsored endeavour 2008 Canadian Mental Health Association - Simon Fraser Branch's Blue Bird House.
